To apply this extra image meta data I’ll be using Photoshop, but I first wanted to go over why this is important to do as your average visitor will never see this information. In all honesty there are a only a handful of people that even know where to look for this data. So why is this important you may ask? This info is for the search engine bots. It gives them a way to better index these images. These images then show up in popular image searches such as Google images, Yahoo Images, etc.

Here’s a quick tip for getting your images listed in Google Image Search. There’s no need to actually submit your images to Google Search. They will be crawled by Googlebot next time your site is indexed. You can however update your sitemap.xml file to include more data that can then be used to categorize your image as bots cannot read embedded text.
