The mass email has gone out. People are expected to be coming in late or not at all. School closings are coming in 1 after another and my insurance agent has already told me she wont be in the office tomorrow due to the storm.
This is what happens in the Midwest when news of a major winter storm is eminent. Blizzard pandemonium has officially set in. Most of us have lived here for years and yet every time a big storm comes around people go into survival mode. I’m not criticizing, nor am I making fun. Hell I subscribe to some of this myself. I’m just pointing out what it’s like living in the Midwest this time of year.
Before I took off from work I overheard a co worker talking about what kind of food they had stored in their freezer. They were glad that they had a gas stove, but were concerned that the power lines weren’t buried and what would they do if the wind kept up and the power went out. The winter panic was ramping up.
They’ve been talking about the, “Big Storm”, for a couple days now. I got a worried phone call from my mom this afternoon. Since we have a new born she was asking how we were set for diapers and formula. I told her we were fine and even though I’m less than a mile from a grocery store and at least 2 drug stores I found my self going on an infant supply run. I wasn’t going to go as I’m truly not that paranoid, but the responsible parent in me and the tiny Mom on my shoulder persuaded me to make the trip. I can and have walked to all of these places in less than 20 minutes. When I finally made my way to the baby isle the shelves were getting pretty bare. More people were worried they were going to be snowed in for weeks.
To my people living in L.A. this might be a shock. Why the hell do you live there Michigan? To my people living up north in colder climates they call us all a bunch of sissies. Again this is just a social statement about what happens when the climate drops as well precipitation.
We’re due for what looks to be between 12-16 inches starting tonight at around 7pm.
