What is the title tag?
The title tag has been one of the most important factors in achieving high organic rankings. The title tag defines the title of the document. The title element is required in all HTML/XHTML documents.
The title element:
- defines a title in the browser toolbar
- provides a title for the page when it is added to favorites
- displays a title for the page in search-engine results
3 Best Practices For Title Tags
1. Include the keyword(s) that the page is optimized for in the most prominent position in the title tag. We have to make sure not to make the organic results look like spam by using to many. So ideally, use just 1 or 2 keywords followed by a hyphen and the name of your company or website. If we use more, the results may look spammy and will drop our ctr.
2. 70 characters is the maximum amount of characters that will display in the serps (if the tag is longer, it will be truncated with “…”). This is plenty because visitors have a short attention span and will click result fast, so you will need to keep these titles concise and compelling.
3. Each page in your site is unique, or at least it should be. This means your title tags should be unique as well. This creates unique content, and the spiders love nothing more than uniqueness.
If you implement the simple steps above, you are doing more than most of your competitors!
