Being a social media specialist I manage a huge number social networks for a large number of companies. It can be a lot to keep track of after a while with all the options out there. Shortly after I lost count of all the profiles I was maintaining it became painfully obvious that I needed a program for keeping track of the social identities. With all the options out there it can be confusing to know which program to use so I put together this review to help point out the pros and cons of each.
Features
Different programs = different features. Though all of these programs are real-time browsers that connect you with your contacts across multiple social networks they don’t necessarily have all the same features. See the graph below.

Supported Social Networks
Each of these programs supports certain social networks. Hootsuite currently supports the largest number of identities, but TweetDeck is right on their heals and adding new networks all the time with Google Buzz and FourSquare additions in the near future.

Supported URL Shortening Services
URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web where a provider makes a web page available under a very short URL in addition to the original. Short url’s are necessary when using micro-blogging services such as Twitter which only allow 140 characters in status updates.
– bit.ly, is.gd, tinyurl, twurl.com
– ow.ly
– bit.ly, digg.com, is.gd, snurl.com, tr.im, twurl.com
Interfaces
Last, but not least here are some screen shots of the various interfaces. This is just one more reason that I prefer TweetDeck as the interface to me is the most visually appealing.

TweetDeck is an Adobe AIR desktop application for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Buzz, Foursquare, and MySpace. Like other Twitter applications it interfaces with the Twitter API to allow users to send and receive tweets and view profiles. It is the most popular Twitter application with a 19% market share as of June 2009, following only the official Twitter.com website with 45.70% share for posting new status updates. It is compatible with several operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. An iPhone version was released on June 19, 2009 and an iPad version was released in May 2010 as well.

HootSuite is the professional Twitter client. With HootSuite, you can manage multiple Twitter profiles, pre-schedule tweets, and measure your success.

Starting out life as a video blogging website, its original aim was to make video uploading from webcams easier to promote online video conversations. Seesmic made its debut at the Demo tech conference where it was called the “Twitter of video”. It had 20,000 users and 70,000 viewers per month as of 2008. On April 3, 2008, Seesmic announced that it had purchased Twhirl, an Adobe AIR based Twitter client.

Thank you for the write up! Actually, HootSuite has supported posting from multiple Twitter and Facebook accounts for a very long time. As well, we also support ht.ly as a URL shortener. For more information on what HootSuite can do for you, check out http://hootsuite.com/about
I didn’t realize that. I’ve been using HootSuite for the past few weeks and haven’t found that option. Thanks for the heads up. Glad you found my post. I’ll update it with this new info.
Keep blogging!
Great post! I think HootSuite is the best one, till now! Thanks for the digg

Thanks for the Kudos. I’ve been trying my hand with these social network monitoring programs for a while now and would have to say that my vote falls somewhere between TweetDeck and HootSuite. They both have options I like, but neither does everything the other one does. Such is life, I’m sure in the future that will change. Thanks for the comment!
I have to correct you on some things. TweetDeck does now support scheduled tweets, and Seesmic has always supported multiple Twitter accounts.

Nice article. One thing, I believe Seesmic supports multiple accounts now; at least on the Blackberry it does.
